UNC has been recently granted a new five-year $54.6 million Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) from the National Institutes of Health. The award will provide another five years of funding for the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute. NC TraCS is a central entity on the UNC campus responsible for the advancement of clinical and translational research, linking health sciences researchers to practitioners across the state. The renewal also represents a new level of partnership between UNC, RTI International and North Carolina A&T University around the three strategic initiatives:

  • Development next-generation technologies to transform clinical research and practice
  • Conducting robust comparative effectiveness studies
  • New paradigms in drug development

Biomedical Informatics core of NC TraCS is key to supporting the institute’s mission through numerous biomedical informatics tools and services, which include Carolina Data Warehouse – Health (CDW-H) as well as Biomedical Informatics Education Initiative. The latter has been instrumental in developing CHIP training programs with CHIP faculty being members of the Biomedical Informatics core. These faculty members contribute to CHIP through mentoring students and providing research practice experiences. CTSA award renewal ensures active engagement of NC TraCS in CHIP growth as a multidisciplinary research and training program.
