Title: Examining Methodologies for Developing Patient Persona
Abstract: While personas in user design are a common practice in the IT industry, there is little literature available on health IT or clinical healthcare. Patient personas, as used in mobile health systems, demonstrate the potential for engaging patients in the improvement of procedures by emphasizing their needs. The purpose of this study is to examine briefly the qualitative and quantitative methodologies that were employed in developing patient personas with the aim of illustrating methodology gaps that could influence their use within a healthcare/clinical context. Patient “personas” were used to query PubMed database and then a series of screening steps were followed to filter the literature to include those that most closely related to patient persona development. A total of ten articles were selected for final analysis. This study identified a few methodology gaps that may hinder the widespread adoption of patient personas, along with a possible means of addressing these gaps through developing a patient persona guideline. Despite the relatively small number of reviewed articles in one database, this study revealed the importance of having an established standard of developing a patient persona to encourage the use of it.
