Greetings: The next DUKE/UNC Joint Health Informatics Seminar is scheduled for Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Title:  Connecting Clinical Informatics and Cancer Outcomes Research

Seminar Abstract:

The Integrated Cancer Information and Surveillance System (ICISS) of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center provides the foundation to enable innovative research to improve cancer outcomes in North Carolina and beyond. The first part of this presentation contains an overview of the clinical informatics initiatives, solutions and services created to support cancer outcomes and comparative effectiveness research. The second part takes a deeper look at standardizing and normalizing clinical nomenclatures to identify medical contexts in research data. These data include cancer registry, Medicare/Medicaid, and private insurer’s claims data.

Presenter:  Adrian Meyer, MS

Adrian is a seasoned computer systems expert with extensive knowledge in the healthcare sector. His experience includes software development for small start-ups to large companies such as Allianz, NCR or Allscripts. His main interests are focused on clinical data mining, clinical informatics and contextual analysis of data. Within ICISS he serves as the Assistant Director of Research Systems and is tasked with building the information technology environment. These efforts include systems and applications for knowledge retention, data cataloging and searchable clinical coding references.
