The MPS in BMHI is a highly interdisciplinary program that prepares the next generation of health informatics leaders.

Graduates of the program will gain knowledge and skills in:

  • management of large scale projects related to clinical and public health information systems
  • development and evaluation of health information systems that impact clinical decision making and health care quality
  • Analysis and management of health data for improvement in clinical practice, biomedical research and public health services

Academics

The program builds on combined strengths of several top-ranked professional schools on UNC campus. Our faculty come from School of Information and Library Science, Gillings School of Global Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Medicine, Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and School of Dentistry.

Curriculum

35 credits
1.5 academic years (17 months) of full time study

The program offers two tracks:

Clinical Informatics for students interested in working in information systems division or office of Chief Information officer in the clinical care setting, as well as for physicians pursuing Clinical Informatics certification.

Public Health Informatics for students with specific career interest in applications of information systems in population health and public health policy.

Students in both tracks complete the common core of informatics, BMHI foundations and professional skills courses as illustrated in the diagram below:

PSMcurriculum

Students in each program track complete an internship in a health care, public health, health research or health IT organization that includes a project, which synthesizes knowledge gleaned from the entire program curriculum.

A note on transfer credit: Up to 7 of the 35 minimum required hours may be transferred from another institution or another program at UNC-Chapel Hill based on existing Graduate School policy for credit transfer.
