PSM in Biomedical and Health Informatics Program – Internship Presentations

July 22, 2020 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Students in the Professional Science Master’s in Biomedical and Health Informatics Program complete an internship that synthesizes knowledge gleaned from the program curriculum. The purpose of the internship is to expand classroom learning to include “hands-on” experience in health IT.

In this occasion David Zablocki, Liyuan Zhu and Ryan Hensley will be presenting their internship projects via Zoom.

Tiltles and abstracts below:

Telehealth Reimbursement Analysis and Considerations in the Post-COVID-19 Era

Presenter: David Zablocki

Abstract: This presentation will provide a general analysis of telehealth reimbursement in the United States before and after the arrival of COVID-19. It provides a broad overview of telehealth utilization, reimbursement challenges, and provides considerations for stakeholders across the healthcare industry.

Early detection of dementia: opportunities for modular home sensor networks

Presenter: Liyuan Zhu

Abstract: Dementia is a sizeable and rapidly growing burden to the health care system with more than 5 million US people in 2018. Early interventions could delay symptoms and lessen the health care burden, but dementia is usually diagnosed too late to institute those interventions. Although we have seen increased interest in using widely available mobile and wearable technologies to monitor for early evidence of dementia, these devices have important limitations that must be addressed for use with older adults. We propose using a home-based sensor system to overcome many of the shortcomings of relying solely on mobile and wearable devices for monitoring. This poster presents a taxonomy of known biomarkers for dementia that can be derived from home sensors and describes a forthcoming study to analyze retrospective cohort data to validate a subset of these biomarkers.

Development of New Workflows for Telemedicine and Well Child Checks

Presenter: Ryan Hensley

Abstract: Electronic health records should be the physician’s greatest tool.  Unfortunately, the EHR often falls short of this goal.  I created a new well child check workflow to encourage patient/parent engagement while streamlining the visit and the documentation.  This new workflow captures data directly from the patient/parent, stores that information in the EHR, and then succinctly presents the relevant data to the provider.  By streamlining this process, the EHR can better help the physician provide better care while decreasing note blot and increasing efficiency.
