Navigating the Pipeline: The Progression of First-Generation Students Through Doctoral Education

Presented by Karri Holley, PhD

Friday, April 6 @ 12-1 pm

Nelson Mandela Auditorium, FedEx Global Education Center, 301 Pittsboro St

First-generation college graduates represent almost one-third of doctoral degree recipients in the United States. Yet the uniqueness of their personal trajectories is rarely acknowledged. Drawing on extensive interviews with first-generation doctoral students and data from the Survey of Earned Doctorates, this lecture considers the importance of finances, family, the academic discipline, and the academic institution in the graduate school experience with an emphasis on how multiple components of a student’s identity including but not limited to the educational achievements of a parent help explain first generation doctoral student achievements.
