MPS in Biomedical and Health Informatics Program – Internship Presentations

April 12, 2021 @ 6:00 am - 7:30 am

Students in the Professional Science Master’s in Biomedical and Health Informatics Program complete an internship that synthesizes knowledge gleaned from the program curriculum. The purpose of the internship is to expand classroom learning to include “hands-on” experience in health IT.

In this occasion Ashlyn Zebrowski, Michael Fried and Rahul Mehta will be presenting their internship projects via Zoom.

Titles and abstracts below:

Digital Health: Driving Innovations in Wound Healing and Patient Education

Presenter: Ashlyn Zebrowski

Abstract: Healthcare as we know it is changing, with major advancements in technology evolving the care continuum for patients, providers, and healthcare systems. To be successful in the field of biomedical health informatics, it is critical to understand the impact of digital technology as part of achieving the Quadruple Aim: elevating the patient experience, improving clinician and care team satisfaction, improving the health of populations, and reducing the cost of health care. ConvaTec is a global medical products and technologies company focused on therapies for the management of chronic conditions, with leading market positions in advanced wound care, ostomy care, continence and critical care, and infusion devices. During my internship, I focused on creating product value propositions for patients, payers, and clinicians, innovating new commercial business models, and designing and developing digital health care solutions for patients with chronic and acute wounds. The largest unmet need within wound care is how to deal with more patients, with less money to pay for them, and with fewer carers to look after them. Lack of consistent and comprehensive wound assessment data presents a key challenge in underpinning evidenced based clinical decision making, achieving care continuity and improving outcomes across multi-disciplinary care teams. My presentation will provide an overview of my work in the design and development of digital technologies to address market unmet needs and drive innovation in wound healing and patient education. Technologies include clinical decision support software, connected devices, and virtual reality.

Developing an Informatics Evaluation Solution to Improve an Existing Health Economics Modeling Process

Presenter: Michael Fried

Abstract: Increasing the use of diagnostic technology can reduce areas of high wasted therapeutic spend that currently exists in the U.S. healthcare system. Stratifying patients prior to treatment decisions can yield medical cost savings and improved patient outcomes. Alva10 is a healthcare startup working with payer systems to pull in new diagnostic technologies needed to address areas of high wasted therapeutic spend. To prove out the value of new diagnostic technology within payer systems, Alva10 provides financial models showing the economic utility in adopting the new tests. Alva10 has identified a project to scale and enhance their current modeling process. This presentation highlights an evaluation methodology used by Alva10 to research new analytics solutions to support the modeling process.

Analysis of Physician Behavior on EPIC E.H.R using De-identified Signal Dataset.

Presenter: Rahul Mehta

Abstract: Perform Descriptive Analysis of Signal Dataset. Select 5 metrics to analyse Physician behavior in EPIC E.H.R. Perform Descriptive and Exploratory Analysis of each metric. Detect Physician outliers in Signal Dataset in each metric and each specialty. Measure workload of each Physician using the Messages received per day metric. Validate Physician outlier workload with Physicians in the normal range. Detect true outliers w.r.t workload.
