October 8, 2018 @ 7:00 am - 8:30 am

Simon A. Jones

Please join us on Monday, October 8th at 11:00 a.m. for a special presentation by Simon Jones, Research Professor at New York University as he delivers his talk “‘Big data’, Policy and Endocarditis.  A case study from the UK.”

WhereManning Hall Room 01, UNC-Chapel Hill Campus

Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss our research on using ‘big data’ to examine the implications of the new guidelines introduced in the UK in 2008. The new guidelines advised against prescribing prophylactic antibiotics to patients at risk for endocarditis who are undergoing invasive dental procedures. Since 2008, the UK guidelines for this condition have deviated from other countries. Endocarditis is a serious heart condition with high morbidity and mortality.  This talk will highlight a number of challenges and possible solutions in using big data to answer complex policy questions.

Bio: I am a research professor in the Department of Population Health, Division of Healthcare Delivery Science, at NYU School of Medicine. I use my extensive experience in data analysis and health informatics to conduct research on health systems, studying how patients access health care, as well as healthcare quality and outcomes. Much of my recent work has involved utilizing the UK’s claims data to explore risk factors for endocarditis.

From 2002 to 2005, I was the head of Health Informatics and Operational Research at Bromley Hospitals National Health Service Trust in the United Kingdom. I became a research fellow at King’s College London in 2007 and a research professor at the University of Surrey in 2011. In 2012, I was appointed Chair in Healthcare Management and Policy at the University of Surrey.
