Brittany: Wound Care Documentation: A Key to Prevention and Compliance Among Healthcare Staff Caring for Veterans
Abstract: Inadequate wound care management and poor wound care outcomes are prevalent issues in many hospitals around the United States. Some of these hospitals include Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers, where veterans are cared for. Veterans, by virtue of combat, are exposed to a number of injuries that can lead to wounds. These wounds, if not addressed properly and in a timely manner, can lead to poor health outcomes, including death. Improper wound documentation and non-compliance by nursing, medical, and auxiliary staff have been attributed to poor health and wound outcomes. VA hospitals are concerned about the mortality associated with poor wound management as well as the increased cost of care for veterans. Most times, hospitals absorb the cost of these deficits in wound care; this has led to serious budgeting problems. Detroit VA hospital stakeholders are among those concerned and interested in finding new ways to combat the pressing wound care issues.

Bhavana: Moonshot Project: Application of Natural Language Processing to Automate Medical Claims Processing  Abstract: Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is a health insurance company that processes health insurance claims through approval and deny decisions. These decisions are processed automatically through a software application, Facets. However, some of the claims are sent to be manually reviewed. The Moonshot Project focuses on the automation of claims adjudication of medical policy review without manual intervention. This is achieved through building a Natural Language Processing model which will read a note from claim, identify keywords, and interpret it to determine if the claim should be allowed, denied, or reviewed. The internship portion of the project concentrates on the denied component of the medical policy reviewed claims
