DO YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HEALTH CARE BUSINESS CONSULTING?
The School of Medicine and Kenan-Flagler Business School are seeking committed medical students to volunteer to participate in a pilot partnership called STAR (Student Teams Achieving Results)– an action based learning program that enables students to do consulting projects for real corporate partners. STAR focuses on developing problem solving, leadership and teamwork skills by placing MBA and Undergraduates on Health Care consulting projects.
When does this happen and what is the time commitment?
- Overall Commitment: The consulting project is aligned with the full-time MBA Spring Semester (mid-January thru early-May.) You must attend a weekly team meeting, in-person or virtually. You can expect the team meeting and additional work to take approximately four hours per week.
- Advance Training: Six hours of required training will take place in December and January, and you can expect a minimal amount of homework in-between the two training dates:
- Thursday, December 6, 6-9 p.m. in Chapel Hill
- Thursday, January 24, 6-9 p.m. in Chapel Hill
- In this training you will receive a shortened version of the Consulting Skills & Frameworks course required for all MBAs to participate. The class will include some executive MBAs and a few undergraduate business students. You will learn to “speak the language” of the STAR Program.
- Preparation:
- Team Charter – Team will meet in December or early January, at a time convenient for all team members. In this meeting you will learn more about your team members and help craft a team charter, including the roles and responsibilities of all team members. Teams will be six business students and potentially one SOM student.
- Launch Weekend - Participation in all (or most) of the Launch Weekend activities:
- Friday, January 25, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in Chapel Hill – Kenan-Flagler Business School
- Saturday, January 26, 9 a.m.-5p.m. – Rizzo Center followed by a dinner, in Chapel Hill
Who is eligible? How many spaces are available?
All fourth-year SOM students are eligible, assuming their schedule allows time for this additional experience.
Currently, at least 7 health care projects have space for one SOM student. This may change based upon MBA and undergraduate business program team membership.
Who is on the team?
It is expected each team will consist of six others, primarily full-time MBAs, led by an MBA who has completed the Consulting Skills & Frameworks Course, and typically, one who has been on a prior STAR team or has consulting experience.
What kind of firms or projects are available?
- Two major pharmaceutical companies
- Two projects on health systems and/or payers
- One local non-profit interfacing with a medical records organization
- Two innovative organizations with business challenges around HIV and transplants
Will I get any course credit?
Not yet. 3 SOM credits for all the training and the project is pending. You can add the training and results of the project to your CV.
