CURRICULUM
The MPS in BMHI is available in both residential (on-campus) and online formats. Students can choose from three different tracks to complete the degree:
Available Tracks for the Master’s Program
The program can be completed in 3 different tracks: standard track (1.5 years), fast-track (1 year), and part-time track (2-4 years). The standard and fast tracks will require up to 17 credit hours for the first 2 terms. By the 3rd term (summer), full-time students should be prepared to complete their internship. The part time track will allow for 3-6 credit hours per term. Credits can be adjusted as needed.
Note: We strongly encourage students to complete their internship during the summer term.

MPS BMHI Curriculum Overview
The Master of Professional Science in Biomedical and Health Informatics program requires a total of 35 credit hours of coursework that includes a required internship that supports the academic components of the program.
Coursework
Students take 12 credit hours of core informatics courses in computer, data, and information science.
- CHIP 732: Database systems in Health Care (3 credits)
- CHIP 690-311 or CHIP 690-320: Systems Analysis (3 credits)
- CHIP 690-335: Introduction to Programming (3 credits)
- Core Informatics Elective (3 credits)
Two of the most notable differences between a Master of Science (MS) and a Master of Professional Science (MPS) are the business skills courses and the internship. Students take 6 credit hours of business electives. These professional components of the program enable the development of workplace skills valued by top employers. Courses are focused on leadership, teamwork, communication, project management, and strategy skills.
Students will be exposed to the foundational concepts in biomedical and health informatics. This coursework will provide perspective and framework to address health care issues through data extraction, analysis, and visualization.
- CHIP 725 – Electronic Health Records (3 credit hours)
- CHIP 721 – US Healthcare Systems (3 credit hours)
- BMHI Foundations Elective (2 credit hours); Recommend CHIP 770: Health Informatics Seminar
Students choose from two tracks: Clinical Health Informatics and Public Health Informatics.
- NURS 870 – Applied Informatics in Complex Health Care Systems (3 credits)
This course focuses on the concepts relevant to health care informatics, the use of computerized information systems, and the use of computer applications to support clinical and administrative decision-making.
- Elective (3 credits)
- Example electives (Offerings and mode vary each semester):
- INLS 613 Text Mining
- INLS 625 Information Analytics
- INLS 642 Data Mining
- INLS 718 User Interface Design
- INLS 777 Perspectives on Information, Technology, and People
- HPM 620 Implementing Health Informatics Initiatives (3 credits)
Focuses on implementing informatics programs and projects in health organizations. Informatics initiatives aim to facilitate effective information use for the purpose of improving the quality of health services and/or efficiency of processes. Therefore, these initiatives have implications for various stakeholder groups, including consumers, practitioners, administrators, and policy makers.
- Elective (3 credits)
- Examples (Offerings and mode vary each semester)
- CHIP 490 – 333 Intro to Public Health Informatics
- HPM 671 Statistical Methods for Health Policy and Management
- PUBH 711 Critical Issues in Global Health
- PUBH 714 Introduction to Monitoring and Evaluation of Global Health Programs
- PUBH 760 001 Clinical Measurement and Evaluation
- CHIP 793 – Health informatics internship (3 credits)
- 300 hours required
