This position is based in Washington DC, however, due to the pandemic, the work mode is currently virtual. Please note that PHI is authorized to do business in many, but not all, states. STAR PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a USAID-supported Global Health talent hub, offering paid fellowships and internships at all career levels. STAR provides participants with immersive experiences at global health organizations and institutions to build capacity and contribute technical expertise to address high-impact needs. STAR Fellows and Interns participate in learning activities to enhance knowledge and skills growth, expand professional networks and support career development. STAR is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI), implemented in partnership with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and the Aspen Management Partnership for Health (AMP Health).
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
Background:
The Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA) is the focus of HIV/AIDS technical leadership for USAID and has primary responsibility for leading the Agency’s efforts within President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a $52 billion multifaceted approach to combating the disease in more than 120 countries around the world since 2003. In cooperation with the US Department of State’s Office of the US Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC), other US Government (USG) partners, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations, USAID provides global technical leadership on the full range of issues related to HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment; manages numerous research and field support programs; and monitors the impact of the Agency’s HIV/AIDS programs. In this endeavor, USAID works very closely with a range of USG agencies involved in the fight against AIDS, such as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense, and Peace Corps. Introduction:
The Strategic Information Program Management Intern (Intern) will be assigned to the Strategic Information Branch within the SIEI Division of OHA within the Bureau for Global Health. OHA has primary responsibility for leading the Agency’s efforts within President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a multibillion, multifaceted approach to combating the disease around the world.
Reporting structure:
The Intern will work closely with the Strategic Information Branch and receive technical guidance from the Data.FI Agreement Officer Representative, who will serve as their onsite manager.
OUTCOMES
By the end of the internship, the Intern will have gained experience and exposure to:
- Identify and describe the core attributes of the STAR global health competencies; defined as development practice, cross cultural awareness, communication, capacity strengthening, ethics of public health, health equity, gender equality and global burden of disease.
- Gain exposure to program management and HIV/AIDs through global health programming.
- Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
Essential Duties:
- Support the management team for OHA’s flagship data and analytics program, Data for Implementation (Data.FI), including external coordination with the project’s consortium members and internal coordination with the project’s core management team and network of USAID activity advisors.
- Supporting programmatic and technical assistance for Data.FI’s existing country and global health COVID-19 programming, including coordinating the review of project deliverables with subject matter experts and other relevant team members.
- Providing support in the planning and development of new Data.FI activities, including COP21 work plan development, review and approval.
- Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming needs and/or the Intern’s own interests.
- Attend program-related events within and outside USAID as requested.
- Possible assistance on in-country technical assistance visits as needed, pending resolution of COVID-related travel restrictions.
- Other tasks or responsibilities fitting Intern’s interests/goals.
Anticipated learning outcomes:
All STAR Interns will participate in learning activities (*approximately 10% time) during their internship. By the end of the internship, the Intern will be able to:
- Increase knowledge and skills in strategy development that supports health systems strengthening program implementation.
- Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
- Deepen understanding of USAID global health programming, policies, and organizational culture.
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Required:
- Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree program or completion of such within the past 12 months, including nursing, physician assistant, or medical degree candidates
- Familiarity with global health, data analytics and/or HIV programs.
- Ability to analyze data from different sources/databases utilizing multiple data analytic platforms.
- Ability to create and present data visuals.
- Strong interpersonal, facilitation and team building skills, and ability to work cross-culturally with diverse teams.
- Demonstrated innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
- This position may require travel. Ability to participate in a field experience, which may involve domestic and/or international travel and overnight stays for up to 2 weeks (pending lifting of COVID-19 restrictions).
- US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
Additional skills (preferred):
- Knowledge of HIV/AIDS.
