Description:
The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global pandemic with the Queens borough in NYC being an epicenter of community transmission. Little is known about the short and long-term impacts of COVID-19 on pregnant and postpartum women and their infants.
In the HoPE study, we will assemble a cohort of 400 women who had at least one pregnancy-related visit (regardless of gestational age) from February 15, 2020 to June 30, 2020 at one of two large public hospitals in Queens, NYC – Elmhurst Hospital and Queens Hospital – and who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection (n=200) and a matched comparison group who tested negative test for SARS-CoV-2 infection (n=200). Using medical chart review and phone-based surveys administered at regular time points, participants will be followed from enrollment to 12 months postpartum to assess maternal and infant clinical outcomes, care utilization, and socio-economic well-being. We will also conduct interviews with a random subset of 40 study participants (20 SARS-CoV-2 infected and 20 uninfected) to gain further insight into the experiences of pregnant and postpartum women in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The primary research question of this study is: “Is infection with SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy associated with poorer maternal and infant health outcomes among a diverse cohort of women and children in Queens, NY?” To answer our primary research questions, we will conduct an observational cohort study with a diverse group of 400 SARS-CoV-2 infected and uninfected pregnant women recruited from two public hospitals in Queens, NY. Our study has the following specific aims:
- Specific Aim 1. To describe clinical outcomes and social and economic characteristics of a cohort of 400 SARS-CoV-2 infected and uninfected pregnant women recruited from two public hospitals in Queens, NYC
- Specific Aim 2. To test whether SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy is associated with maternal and infant morbidity and mortality during pregnancy and 1 year postpartum in a cohort of SARS-CoV-2 infected and uninfected women
Our study has a secondary research question: “What specific effects has the COVID-19 pandemic had on pregnant and postpartum women’s socioeconomic wellbeing that may impact their ability to stay healthy and access and utilize healthcare?”
- Specific Aim 3. To explore the social and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal, child, and household wellbeing using a cohort of SARS-CoV-2 infected and uninfected women
VIBE study: CoronaVirus Impact on birth Equity
The purpose of this research is to examine the experiences of pregnant and postpartum persons during the COVID-19 outbreak, and how experiences and exposures may have had an impact on the care and health of women who were pregnant or had a baby during this time. The strain on healthcare providers and pregnant persons may have caused experiences of stress, and strain on the resources available to pregnant persons. This study is implementing a web-based survey of pregnant and recently postpartum persons that have attended Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai West, and Elmhurst Hospitals for pregnancy care in the last six months. We have approximately 250 completed surveys at this time, and recruitment is ongoing.
