OBJECTIVES:
Takeda's summer internship program blends real world experience with an extensive overview of the pharmaceutical industry. Knowledgeable mentors will provide guidance as you gain professional hands-on experience. The summer internship program is 12 weeks in length and offers a unique perspective into a world-class pharmaceutical company. Compensation is competitive, and financed temporary housing is available to those who qualify. PROJECTS:
A. The Clinical Biomarker Innovation and Development group is seeking a highly motivated scientist who will assist the team to analyze high-complexity proteomics data, such as mass cytometry, from Takeda sponsored clinical trials using standard and algorithm-based analysis software to identify and monitor immune cell changes in patients with autoimmune diseases and other conditions of interest to Takeda.
The candidate will be empowered to collaborate with internal and external resources to build a robust analysis plan to support our clinical translational and biomarker research. The successful candidate will work closely with project teams and other functional group colleagues for all the supporting studies. This will provide the candidate an opportunity to overview program status and learn more about drug development and biomarker discovery.
B.As an intern in the Clinical Biomarker Innovation & Development (CBID) Oncology and Companion Diagnostics team, you will be provided with the opportunity to learn the process of clinical biomarker development and utilize novel genomic technologies to better understand disease biology.
C. Specifically, the area of biomarker discovery and development to characterize target engagement, PD and safety endpoints at our contract research organizations using LC-MS methods represents a major opportunity in drug development and is currently under-supported by CBID. The focus of the internship would be to assist in development of LC/MS and proteomic methodologies, and their application to identify clinically-relevant CSF and serum/plasma biomarkers in the Neuroscience therapeutic area.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Develop and implement hypothesis-driven data analysis to support translational and biomarker research to support autoimmune disease programs.
- Perform exploratory analysis of high-dimensional proteomics data from a variety of platforms to support data-driven program strategies.
- Apply computational biology and machine learning approaches to characterize disease mechanisms, therapeutics mechanism of action, and identify clinical biomarkers.
- Must be deadline driven and have a high level of organizational and planning skills
- The ideal candidate exhibits strong analytical, problem-solving, and oral and written communication skills; he or she also possesses the ability to work well in teams, effectively manage multiple projects, and present ideas clearly and concisely.
- Experience in each of the following MS Office applications:
- MS Outlook - Proficient
- MS Word - Proficient
- MS Excel - Proficient
- MS PowerPoint - Proficient
QUALIFICATIONS AND PREFERRED EXPERTISE:
- Applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. accredited university for the semester before and immediately following the internship.
- Applicants must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree and have completed at least their sophomore year or be a graduate level student pursuing either a PharmD or Master’s degree
- For Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students, a major in immunology, biology, bioinformatics or life science field is preferred.
- Strong fundamental understanding of immunology, cytometry and ligand-binding based methods and analysis methods such as Spotfire and FlowJo are highly desirable.
- Experience in translational research and algorithm-based analysis programs such as R or Cytobank is a plus.
- Self-starter, able to take direction, good oral and written communication, presentation skills, and project management skills

Intern pay rate ranges are from $18/hour to $45/hour, depending on students level in their undergraduate or graduate program and level professional experience.
