CHIP is very excited to announce a new course in Health Care Analytics.

As a result of a partnership with the Kenan-Flagler Business School, this course will be offered in the 2018 fall semester.

MBA893B: Health Care Analytics

The Health Care Analytics course will provide students with an introduction to how analytics and data are transforming the healthcare industry.

The heath care ecosystem (e.g., providers, payers, life sciences firms) is undergoing an evolutionary shift in both business focus and clinical capabilities. Historical models of health care research, delivery, and payment - based heavily in fee-for-service business models and transaction-oriented decision making - have produced an unsustainable rise in the cost of health care without a corresponding improvement in health outcomes. Over the past decade, the exponential adoption of new information technologies - electronic medical records, data-generating medical devices, health information exchanges, consumer health apps, and more - is altering this unsustainable trajectory, and health care organizations of all sizes and types are moving to become risk-aware, data-driven businesses.

As a business leader in the health care industry, you will need to be well-versed in harnessing the power of clinical, financial, and administrative data to drive strategic business assessment, planning, operations, and decision support. In this course you will gain practical knowledge on how organizations conceptualize, plan, and execute business and clinical analytics. This course is ideal for students who aspire to be Strategy Consultants, Operations Managers, Directors, and/or General Managers in the healthcare industry.

Students will learn the basic building blocks for any health organization to effectively leverage data, business intelligence, and advanced analytics. Topics covered in the course include the development and use of analytics in support of quality-based financial reimbursement, population health/disease management initiatives, and value-based contracting and reimbursement. We will also cover the fundamentals of effective design and communication, as well as opportunities for future innovations. During the course, student teams will undertake a hands-on project culminating in group presentations at the end of the term.
