Survive and Thrive: A New TA Institute

August 10, 2021 @ 5:00 am - August 11, 2021 @ 7:00 am

As a graduate student, being assigned a Teaching Assistant role for the first time–or with an expanded set of TA responsibilities–can feel daunting. This institute provides graduate students with functional skills central to their success in their TA roles. Sessions and workshops during this institute are designed to increase TAs’ confidence around interacting with students, anticipating challenges and planning potential solutions, and effectively supporting students in their TA roles.
  • Tuesday August 10 – Building rapport with students and cultivating student engagement. This session will provide TAs ideas and practical tips for establishing rapport with students, setting expectations, and active learning strategies.
  • Wednesday August 11 – Ask Me Anything (AMA) panel discussion with experienced TAs and Knowing Your Students: Supporting Student Diversity and Success. Experienced TAs will provide open discussion and advice for becoming a successful TA and answer questions about what it’s like to be a TA at UNC Chapel Hill. Then we’ll discuss scenarios for handling challenging situations and addressing student diversity needs as well as introduce campus resources.
Participants are expected to attend both days. REGISTER
