CHIP Announces Return of Summer Program for Undergraduate Students

CHIP is excited to announce the return of summer programming for undergraduate students interested in learning more about data science and health informatics! Readiness and Preparation for Informatics and Data Science, RAPID (formerly ENABLE) was established to develop skill sets for undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds to explore careers and training in clinical translational research; specifically data science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and health equity. Initially established in 2018 as the Extensible Network-Accessible Biomedical & Health Informatics Lifelong Learning Environment (ENABLE), the program has been renamed and the curriculum updated to incorporate AI and health equity elements. Throughout the program, students will be exposed to data science, machine learning, and programming. Learning from PhD candidates in health informatics as well as UNC faculty and leading researchers, students will work to develop programming skills and learn how to use generative AI as a tool. Throughout the summer, students will work on a data based research project, culminating in a repository of work as well as an academic poster. In addition, students will have the opportunity to work on app prototype focused on health equity.

2024 ENABLE Cohort

Other exciting components to the program include field trips to locations such as RTI International, SAS, and more. Students will have the opportunity to interact with industry professionals and build their leadership skills.

The RAPID program is now accepting student applications for Summer 2025. The 7-week program will run from June 9 through July 25. Questions about the program can be directed to program coordinator Addie Griffin. RAPID is a partnership between CHIP and NC TraCs.
