Certificate in Public Health Informatics

The Graduate Certificate in Public Health Informatics (PHI) program is a 12-credit hour certificate for current Public Health students. It includes a 2-hour internship experience, offered by the Gillings School of Global Public Health (SPH). The certificate prepares graduates for a variety of public health informatician roles. Public Health Informatics is an emergent area that has been defined as the systematic application of information and computer science and technology to public health practice and research. Public Health Informatics is distinguished from other healthcare informatics specialties in its focus on population / community health, prevention orientation and its use by government agencies to define policies used in public health practice.

This will be a flexible program utilizing both Gillings School of Global Public Health (SPH) and the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) courses. Students must complete six hours in approved SPH courses and three hours in approved SILS courses. The final three hours will be an elective choice for the student within the certificate offerings. There are three core courses, a internship and an elective.

Students will be required to include a public health informatics related work arrangement for their course internship which will run concurrent with their departmental degree internship and be monitored by the program administrator. At the start of the certificate, the student will be advised that access to an informatics environment within their masters internship will be needed to meet the 2 credit hour requirement. This “environment” must be pre-approved by the program administrator. A “capstone” related paper will be completed by the student describing their informatics internship and be turned into the program administrator before graduation.

The PHI certificate program is comprised of existing courses that fulfill program requirements for the MPH and MHA at SPH as well as MSIS degree at SILS. For matriculated students in any of the above programs, one course, overlapping with the main degree requirements (3 credits) can be counted for both the degree and the PHI certificate.
