Clinical Informatics Certificate

1) Expand the classroom learning to include some "hands-on" experience in health IT, in the context of a particular industry sector (this may include providers, payers, or even research organizations such as a CRO or a clinical studies research center); For IS students, at UNC it is desired that the student work with a mentor with clinical experience. For student with clinical background, it is expected that they work with a mentor with expertise in the informatics or IT area. A CHIP faculty will supervise the internship.
2) It should involve writing a brief proposal (2/3 paragraphs) describing the scope of the work; the proposal must be approved by the faculty leading the internship and a copy should be shared with the CHIP Administrator (i.e., Javed).
3) The internship typically lasts for four months but may overlap between two semesters and hence may cover a longer period (six/seven months). It should engage the student in both theoretical and practical work which involves investigating a clinical informatics challenge and developing prospective ways to address the challenges.
4) The deliverable is a slide presentation to be held on a set date agreed upon with the lead faculty and industry mentor.  Finally, a poster summarizing the key problems addressed, data collection methods, and major findings should be presented on the day of the presentation.
5) The final grade for the internship will be assigned by the lead faculty.

Please print the Internship Contract, fill out, and sign. This should be turned into the CHIP coordinator to register you.

Industries:

The internship course is designed to give students an industry perspective, on topics like research and development, as well as a hands on experience. The time granted for these projects usually will be one academic semester, but this may vary, depending on the project. The type of students that are in need of internship experience have a varied background, including clinical (MD, Nursing, and Pharmacy), IT, and business. Typically, this course is an unpaid experience.
